The Truth about Celery Juice
Where do I begin… This isn’t a topic I usually post about but when I thought about what I want you guys to take away from House of Classy, this definitely fit in. One of my 2019 goals is to be more conscious about the products I use and put into my body. It’s honestly a bit scary what is in some of the products we use every day. As I transition into a new phase in my life and thinking about starting a family in the near future, it is very important to me to live an extra healthy lifestyle.
Disclaimer: I have been drinking celery juice for just over two month every morning.
The Why?
I have anxiety and depression. There are certain times of year that are worse than others and a large part of this is due to the change in weather. Living in Vancouver has proven to be difficult not only because of the sky rocketing pricing of well… everything, but also because of the cold dreary weather nine months of the year. I am very fortunate to be able to travel down to my home away from home in Scottsdale, AZ. But, for the most part, I am stuck in the grey (what I feel is depressing) weather. I have also been struggling with weight gain and hormone imbalances after coming off of the birth control pill almost two years ago. My body has not been able to regulate itself and I have gone to every doctor and tried everything over the past year. You could say I am a little frustrated… I will touch more on that in a separate post.
Where it all began…
I grew up living a very healthy lifestyle. My dad being a commercial fisherman meant we had seafood three times per week, if not more. My favourite food to this day is salad. When I was little and we went out for a meal, I would ask for a caesar salad instead of french fries. What kid does that?! Juicing became a part of my life about five years ago while living with my parents. It had just become popular and we jumped on the band wagon real quick. Like I said… healthy family. It wasn’t up until recently I thought about juicing again due to my health. When I started researching the best juices for my main health concerns, celery has literally taken over the internet. There are so many people raving about what it has done for them and more specifically the health benefits of juicing it. Regarding mental health, the importance of gut health can make all the difference in the world. Celery juice works wonders on your gut! I am definitely not an expert but check out the Medical Medium blog for more detailed information.
How to Make it
1.] Drink 8-16 ounces of juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and don’t eat or drink for about 20-30 minutes after.
2) The fresher the celery, the better. Don’t put it through the juicer and then leave it in the fridge [even overnight.] Drink it as soon as you make it!
3) No mixing! To receive all the benefits of the celery, you have to drink it straight up. You may not enjoy the taste of it right away. In that case you can add cucumber or apple to your celery juice but over time, phase out the amount of cucumber/apple to receive all the benefits of the celery juice.I
Directions
Rinse the celery and run it through a juicer. Drink immediately for best results. Alternatively, you can chop the celery and blend it in a high-speed blender until smooth. Strain well with cheesecloth and drink immediately.
I’ve had a few messages asking about the amount of celery it takes to make enough juice when I posted it on my stories. I usually buy organic celery stalks [unless I find it chopped in a bag already] and try to pick the biggest bunch in the pile. One stalk of celery typically makes about 25-30 ounces of juice, which makes about 2 full glasses. I normally buy five stalks and keep them in the refrigerator to use for each day of the work week and then stock up again on the weekend!
My Results
The two main reasons for starting the celery juice was:
1.] Mental health improvements
2.] Weight/hormone management
Ladies, let me fill you in. Over the past two months I have noticed a huge difference! I feel so much better. My energy levels are way up, I feel less foggy throughout the day, and I have really begun to lose weight and keep it off! Granted I have been at the gym three days a week more than usual [but like I said, more energy!] I really can’t tell you enough about how this green vegetable has changed my life for the better! If you have a chance to try it, even at your local Whole Foods, just to see if you like it. I can almost promise you will notice a difference. I saw a difference within the first week of trying it and I couldn’t be more happy I took the plunge and made a change for my health.
